Cylinder Mowers

I have noticed that there is hardly (if ever!) a mention of cylinder mowers on the Forum. We still use an 20years old Atco on a couple of gardens and the finish is second to none. Anyone else?

  • i use a customers mower and i have to agree that they give a great finish if you can keep them short. last summer i had to cut this lawn twice a week as it is a new lawn and grows very quickly . as long as i was taking at most 1 inch off at a time it .the other problem is the cost of sharpening the cylinder

  • I think its just due to the running costs and that most lawns are not flat enough to use a cylinder mower.

Strangely enough I have been looking at cylinder mowers on ebay this am.

  • In my first couple of years I often borrowed a suffolk punch 14 inch cut for smaller lawns, and it was a pleasure to use, but the issue of lawn flatness and keeping the cylinder sharp daily means its a non starter for me as 90% of my lawns would not be suitable.

  • The reason 'most lawns are not flat enough' is probably down to the use of rotary mowers, especially the wheeled versions. We use Honda and Hayter rotaries, all rollered on 90% of our lawns, recyclers elswhere, but love the finish of the Atco. I suppose regular usage of a cylinder mower takes the maintenance to the next level, if that's what the customer wants.

I have just obtained a Ransomes 61 Matador that hasn't run for a few years(should be up and running soon!) especially for a 'wedding lawn' of over 1300sq m that we look after. Took a good 2-3hrs with the Honda, should cut a bit of time, but that's not so important as the finish.
