Cutting grass up to a lower path edge

One thing I always dislike is cutting a lawn where it goes up against a path that is slightly lower level than the lawn ....... higher, no problem with the strimmer to get a nice straight line finish but otherwise, its so easy to end up scalping the edge of the grass with the cord which really looks rough ...... What I tend to do is just run a halfmoon against the path edge every few weeks to get rid of the encroaching soil/grass but its quite time consuming though it does look nice afterwards.Anyone found a better way?

  • Simples !. Use a roller mower so that you can let the roller overhang & go along with edging shears first - then the mower will pick up the clippings.
  • if only it was that simple!! I use a roller mower but jamming the edging shears between the path and the grass proves very difficult and the shears go blunt very quickly!

  • Geoff - does your path have a straight edge, as in - a row of slabs?

I've been looking for a tool to cut down the edge of the slabbed footpath / patio that butts up to the lawn - something I've always liked to do occasionally for regular customers as it really does make an impression.

I would use two hands and a strong serrated bread knife for close control and a clean edge but...

I've just ordered one of these from Amazon -- not sure how good it'll be.

Stihl combi attachment for us to, when we don't want to edge manually at site.

Well Pete, did you try that edging tool from Amazon?
  • I use the SH86 just for the vac mainly, great not worries apart from emptying the bag. Best to either rake or blow the leaves into a good pile then vac up.
I had a race the other day with one of the boys, me on the rake and vac him on the rake and bag.
Put it this way he'd done 2 bags and I was still vac'ing. But it is horses for courses, loads of leaves etc get into a big pile and bag it. Generally tidying up the 86 is g8.
