Customers helping out - do you mind?

Hi All.I have a few customers that like to garden but just cant manage to cut the grass and hedges but like to do the boarders. I supose what I am saying is do you mind if they still do a bit in the garden or do you prefer to do the whole garden yourself?

  • may fav things are hedge cutting and grass cutting. I have one customer who likes gardening in knows nothing. when he asks when I am going to do somthing and why I havent done it, such as some climbing roses in june, he wanted it pruned as it wasnot neat enough. My response was if I do it now it will damage the plant, I would happily dead head it but not cut back. I went away after finishing on the fri came bag on the mon and it had been masacerd! I asked how comes and his reply was when I want someting done it gets done!

Many of my customers are like this & I don't mind in the slightest. It all adds to variety & keeps me interested. To be honest, I like cutting grass, sad I know but I find it very satisfying.
  • It Is very true about the money side of things. I seem to have the probolem of bing young and also my mum used to run the village post office so my number was given to many OAPs wanting there grass cut for £5 and the like so a lot of my early jobs was just as a helping hand. In later jobs I have been brought in for my knowlage which is nice just annoying when you have customers that do as they like n not what is advised!
  • i only want the grass /and /or hedges and trees .....................i dont do weeding (unless £20 p/h)

on the fri came back on the mon and it had been masacerd!

if they want it done your options are to 'do it' as they are the customer and will pay you !, but always 'advise' like you did !

or its your decision to be proffessional and do as you feel which is correct -due to wanting to have a good reputation.
  • Don't mind a bit of help at all.

A lot of my domestic customers are elderly who loved to garden and now with one thing or another are unable to do it.
Pottering around is the only thing they can do to get out. I get to speak to interesting people who can still teach mr a thing or to about gardening
  • Hi Kieran,

I don't mind at all - at the end of the day it's their garden not mine! My price isn't reduced for them doing a bit so it doesn't make any difference.

In terms of being asked to do something that isn't right I'll always explain why it isn't right & then it depends upon what the issue is. For hard landscaping I'll walk away. If it's a simple case of pruning a shrub then I ask for a disclaimer - quick note confirming that I've advised them not to do it & they still wish to go ahead. That avoids any future 'misunderstanding'.

    Kind regards

    Donny
  • Hi guys.

Thanks for all the coments. Its good to know what you all think about it. yer i dont mind if they help and just when they get in the way, especialy when striming! And yer I will have to take note of the disclaimer and get them to sign it then still do the work. at least then I have a thing to more or less say I told you so. Or have them sack me for either not doing it or the plant dying!
