Customer database and Google maps?

Hello all,

I've been thinking about what is the best way to store and remember all of your customers and I have a thought about using google maps/ earth.

Now i'm obviously not thinking about this being a public thing but I'm wondering how useful it might be to have all of your customers in an easy to look at and work out distances and information using google?

Has anyone tried this or using a similar system?

  • I have done this and did find it useful while planning schedules. May go back to it again in March when I'm putting together the 2012 calendar. Having an image is so much more real and simplifies things a bit. You can join the dots with as short a line as possible, work out an efficient round. I do recommend you try.

yes we have all our sites & contact details on a private google map that anyone of us can view.

Really usefull and helps visualise client location/routing.

  • Great to hear you guys are using this to effect. I'm also thinking that when you get a new customer (smart phone providing) you can simply add the location and add this to the master copy of your map later?.

You do it real time from the smart phone (however, I dont know capabilities for Android phones etc).

No need to update any 'master map' as there is only one map instance - ie that stored at Google

  • When I say Master copy I mean that you can add your location of where you are to your phone but then back it up to your P.C/ Lap top, and i'm guessing but surely this all needs to be fairly private???, the customer details at least.

No, nothing is held on your phone, except what is stored in the phone's browser local cache.

Back at your PC, you could access the same google map and then cut&paste comments to a local database/outlook etc.

There's alot more you can do if you've an iPhone, turn on location services and take a picture, it's then geo cached and can then be added to your map

    If I've misunderstood, my apologies....

  • No, no problem, you haven't, pretty sure you can still geo cache with Android anyway! :) I'll have a mess around with this system, but it seems like it could be the way to do things and it's only going to get easier the more the technology develops!!! can't wait!.

I use pin drop for the iPhone, free app and you can categorise with coloured pins. Perfect.

Try BatchGeo. You can create a map from a spreadsheet just by uploading a client's postcode

It's free to use but I think data held on their server has a time limit (otherwise it's pretty steep at $99 a month).

Has smartphone iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows7 apps too.

  • Sorry, have been busy with other things but i'm going to try and get this sorted in the next couple of days, Batchgeo looks interesting, i'd really like to have a comprehensive database or easy to look at overview of all my customers that is stored both on my p.c and phone and be able to sync between the both.
