Concrete Pond renovation

A city farm has asked me to help renovate a cracked concrete wildlife pond which has irregularly sloping, steep and bouldered edges. Puddled clay is not recommended in case it dries out and water gets between concrete and clay and lifts the clay liner up.A rubber liner would be very difficult to install with all the rocky edges and vertical edges topped with stone and there is the worry of projectiles damaging it.Concrete (ready mix or mixed on site) as a skim would be more costly and the adolescent oak tree beside the pond and previous cracking means I can't guarantee its durability. I've had a quick peek at waterproof resins which have a coverage of say 6sqm per kg and aren't very expensive.Anyone have any experience with this? Any suggestions? There's a team of volunteers to do the work but unskilled.

  • A photo would be really helpfull...

  • I've used aquacote before for a similar but much smaller project that yours:

It's good stuff goes off with a finish like fibreglass almost, very easy to put on. I found it quite expensive though and you have to work out carefully how much coverage you can realistically get. Might be worth a look.

I would have a look at glass fibre that can be applied in-situ. It can be used for ponds and I had also had a roofer make a glass fibre roof for my office!
  • thanks for the tips Andy and Nick.  I'll look it up.

  • Without a picture I'd probably suggest fibreglass. We often use it to line pools. I use this guy - John Bulkley 07711 052 171. Semi retired and living I think in Herts but he would be able to give you a starting price even if you didn't use him.

  • Hi Chris, I have kept Koi carp for over 25 years and am pond number 4. The reason for that is the other 3 worked but not well. The only way to have longevity and peace of mind is Glass Fibre, then a coating with whatever colour you like. It is a bit costly but you end up doing it only the once, you also end up with a very robust barrier to stop any leaks.

Second option is a quality butyl liner but never looks as good and has a limited life span. Nearly all pond people I know always end up with a Glass fibre ponds after wasting hundreds of pounds trying other methods. Hope this helps.
  • I'd grind out the crack with a disc cutter,to make it around 100mm wide, mix some concrete, with the addition of fibres, pour and tamp, float up. Wait for the concrete to cure then fibre glass the lot.
  • Thanks Dave. I don't know where the leak occurred and which of the visible cracks and lines might be the problem. I haven't taken photos during my only visit. It looks like either glass fibre or a resin such as aqua cote will be the solution to the awkward shape and projectile issue.
  • If fibre grassing is it necessary to worry about opening and filling cracks?
