Hey everyone, I was looking into getting a Cobra 19" pro roller mower for next years maintenance however i have had a spanner thrown in the works so to speak, I have noticed that Cobra have switched over from a Kawasaki engine to a Subaru engine, unlike with the reliability of the Kawasaki engine that I'm confident with, I have no idea what a Subaru mower engine is like? Any one have experience with these engines? Not worried about spares as the local boys can get them, I'm more after info about reliability of the engine???Cheers Harry

As long as it's a genuine suburu and not rebadged rubbish you will be fine. My guess is that they are offering cobra a better price!! But still a Japanese engine so should be reliable.

Subaru bought out robin did they not? So it might just be a rebadged robin (which were okay) or it may be a totally new engine.

I must be an engine snob as i would not usully buy anything that was not honda kawasaki or at a push kohler. I think the best engine is no engine at all.  I can't  wait until battery powered mowers get better.

  • I was looking at the exact model for next year Harry as I've got the 46cm roller with the Briggs - I think it's the same one you have trialled.

The Kawasaki engine which I'm going to get is available at mowersand spares.co.uk as well as other outlets - all are priced at about £859.

  • Cant help you too much but i bought a Ariens mower a couple of months ago with a Subaru engine and the one thing i've found is that fuel consumption is down on the couple of other mowers i have with B&S engines...thats all i can say as its early days.

    • Crikey! The one thing I hated about my last Briggs-engined mower was that it doubled fuel use compared to Honda engines. If the fuel comsumption is even worse than that they must be pretty inefficient.

They aren't pro-spec machines with the Subaru engine on, are they? What's the warranty?

I love the Honda engines too! They just seem to sip the petrol.
      • When i say down ..i mean they use less :)  ..apologies for the confusion

Hi Paul, the warranty is 2 years domestic , 1 year commercial , the new Briggs engine on the hayter pro is extremely fuel efficient but being it's an eco model engine you can only play with it to improve performance to a certain point, so even in mildly moist grass conditions it is a useless collector compared to my old hayter pro, have trialed a little cobra roller mower and thus far I am extremely impressed with its capabilities, although this little one is not a pro model but as I was given it to test I'm not going to complain if and when it breaks down, the larger pro model though will be out of my own pocket (although at cost price) I have never used a mower with a Subaru engine.
        • Good to know, Harry. I've not looked at them before so didn't know they had a pro version.
