Cloud Tree which species?

I blame myself for this as I created a basic one using a single stem hazel bush ina woodland garden. Now I've been asked to create some more formal ones so I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to what young trees I could use which won't cost 1 x arm + 1 x leg?preferably a pine/cedar but any "evergreen" will do to get this project started.I've had a look at some of the web sites but as soon as the suitable trees and shrubs are displayed the costs shoot up so if anyone can suggest a trade supplier that would also be appreciated. Many thanks,Bernard

  • Although I've not bought trained topiary off them it might be worth contacting Landcare in south Glos. Also Middlecombe nursery south of Bristol always helpful (fantastic cloud pruned olive on site), and some good Ilex crenata shown on their web site.

The cost of these ready trained trees is too much for my regular customers so I've always meant to start off suitable bare root trees that wont take decades to form. I can recommend The Niwaki book on pruning and shaping - the author (Jake hobson) recently joined LJN so maybe its worth dropping him a line?
  • Gareth,

Yes there are only so many hours for those tasks we would like to do. :)

Thank you for these suggestions I'll follow them up.

    Many thanks,

  • Probably good advice to steer clear of Ilex crenata, at any size, since there have been some disease issues with them recently, and DEFRA has them down as one in particular to check, including one supplier that I have heard of recently, ordered to burn all of their stock of them.

I believe that the original problem came from Dutch stock, but be careful.

    all the best
