closeboard fencing

having problem with this customer, i done a job a few doors down from him last november, it included a closeboard fence, but as time goes by differant suppliers use differant treatments for their preasure treating, the colour is sometimes differant, this new customer thinks he should have the same colour as his friend, but as i have tried explaining this is newley treated feather edging and the other job was done over 7 months ago, the colour will vary, by the way i dont nail any of the timber together, it is all screwed together, string lined, so all screws are lined up, gravel boadrs are 150mm x 50mm timber, (not skinney 25mmx150mm) a few pics may help, if i am wrong with what i have done then please let me know, JUST TO LET EVERY ONE KNOW I HAD TROUBLE GETTING THE MONEY FROM THIS CUSTOMERS FRIEND.

  • the only problem getting the money from the other bloke was that the job was nearly 7 weeks work and when i ask for some money half way through he said no, but he was very arrogant about it but he did give me x amount after i explained that in a long job then there must be a intrim payment.

this new fence doesnt need to match up with anything it a brand new closeboard and picket fence, i explained to the customer that it has a green colouring as it is freshly preasure treated, but he want it the same colour as his friends

  • Did he request the same colour when placing the order or was he told it would be the same colour?
Timber that is treated as a preservative impregnated into it under extreme pressure, the preservative usually includes a dye that as green or brown pigments incorporated into it.
Different timber as different moisture contents and absorbency rates, the timber is treated with a preservative that's the job sorted regarding the treatment, the colour pigments are secondary and will alter in time regarding the amount of moisture due to dampness rain etc in the atmosphere, in summer the timber can fade so it looks almost like bare uncoloured wood however its been treated.
buy the bloke a tin of Dulux and a roller.

  • no the customer didnt request the same colour as the other customers, and no he wasnt told it would be the same colour, trying to get an exact match nearly 7 monthe later would be nearly imposable anyway

  • Did his friend go with brown, or is it just a different shade of green?

If the customer didn't make it clear to you he wanted the same fence colour as his friend beforehand, don't see he has a leg to stand on.

Assuming both are green, I'd politely explain the effects of weathering, tell him the fence will naturally change colour over time after exposure to the sun and elements, and it should look similar to his friend's fence eventually.

    Nice workmanship by the way.

  • Cant see any problem looks a really good job!

  • all sorted now after i told him to go and speak to my supplier, which he did this morning, and the customer has now paid in full, it just niggles me, i am the skilled tradesman and he was just trying to find fault

    phil

  • Looks great to me how do you not know the neighbours has been treated since? also we have had a lot of rain and the weather can change the colour in wood over time.
Have they thought about staining it to match?
