Hi, Do we have any LJN members that have purchased large items of second-hand landscaping equipment recently ? If so, what due diligence did you perform ? How did you go about it? Who did you use to check whether it's legit ? How did the Seller react ? The reason ? I have recently attempted to purchase (privately) an expensive piece of equipment second hand. The item looked good, at a reasonable cost. So, wanting to take it further and aware of the market in stolen equipment I asked if proof of ownership was available, whether serial numbers could be made available for checking (...where I intended to check it I was unsure - hence this thread...) Well it went quiet, no response to calls and 'suddenly' the equipment was no longer available. Call me a cynic, but did I rattle the seller unrealistically or did I hit on a scam ? Where would you / how would you check out serial numbers or recognise if they had been tampered with... Love some practical feedback on this

  • T.E.R trailer register . all ifor williams trailers sold are on this with previous owners name and address on record relating to the serial number on the plate by the tow-hitch.

if u smell a rat Dont Buy it........

people should sell from there own home/business.
phone number should relate to this same area code.

if they hold out on a question / hesitate ,try to laugh it off or become aggressive be wary.

if in doubt : do phone the police . i did this morning as a well known criminal here offered me some jcb hedge-cutters. as i refused he then stole my builders rusty saw !!!!! the police said as he was a 'known criminal , i should have /or can dial 999. to alert them . they wanted me to do this straight away so they could catch him with them...................... hes in and out of prison every 3 months !

Had a similar experience, asked same as yourself serial numbers etc & location of equipment for viewing as knew the area quite well (it was in Shetland Isles - picture showed a couple of lovely oak trees, only one problem not aware of any trees in Shetland Isles). Result was same article was removed from sale!
