Chainsaw trousers for hedge cutting

I just recently cut myself on the leg while hedge cutting.I was very lucky as it was not a deep cut and it was simply stuck back together with glue. This is the first time I've done this in 20 years of hedge cutting.I wondered though if anyone uses protective trousers when using a hedge cutter and if they actually offer any protection from a hedge cutter rather than a chainsaw.

  • I seem to remember from the Stihl catalogue that they do hedgetrimming trousers. I can't remember what protection they had in them though.

Chainsaw trousers aren't going to help you too much, Chainsaw trousers protect your leg because the fibres wind round the cluth and stop the saw.

  • Thanks, didn't know you could get these.
Does anyone use them or supply their employees with them?
I wasn't sure if the chainsaw trousers would offer protection from a hedge cutter.
  • I've often though about this. but so far I've never got any. The problem is that if you have all the different protective trousers you'd be having to change trousers all day. An hours hedge cutting for this client - hedgecutter trousers on, strimming at the next client - brush cutter trousers on, kneeling down at the next client - trousers with knee pads.
I always put chainsaw trousers on for chainsaw work but otherwise I'm just careful. It might be worth it for bigger hedge jobs, but sods law says that if you cut yourself it will be on the poxy little job that you didn't bother putting the trousers on for.

  • Any solid workwear is better on your legs than cheapo/crap...

i use black brushcutter/strimmer ones from stihl for hedgecutting- thick cotton.

wear relative to the main job that day.

green old stihl ones for mowing/ small jobs.

mascot ones for heavier/ bigger jobs.

main items for chainsawing are head/face, gloves and ears for chainsawing.. maybe steel boots.
