chainsaw protective clothing

hi all,it seems a technical area : catagories of safety protection ! see stihl catalogue........for full details ....catagories 0,1,2 &3 i can only find items that are 0 or 1.. and class A or C...........C seems to be all round better than A protection.where A is for people that know 'what they are doing' ie forestry workers full time.some chain-saw jackets seem to advertise highlighted areas round stomach/kidneys other shoulders and arms? do some have 17 layers cat 'C' all over? do these mentioned ONLY cover areas highlighted in brochure ?? also which is best material? rub-off ,rip-stop or chain snagging??????? how do stihl 'classic' green trousers with metal rings on 'waist work with braces ? HELP PLEASEany comments and has anyone got a spare chainsaw jacket for sale?? thanks rob/hows business also??!

  • ok thanks , i agree with both of you ...................

i just got some gloves as my 'brother' helps me sometimes !!
white leather protected on top of both hands - for using on the ground
green polyester/yellow hide for using saw up tree as its better comford /grip ie less restriction & accurate movement.

trousers i now realise will , for up a tree, will be a bit heavy/maybe not warm as seatless !! hope braces work out?

so jacket protection on ' wasteline or shoulders/arms is most suitable folks ?? i have a stihl/peltor hat/visor/ear defender combi. i have classic stihl c-saw brown boots (notice i like stihl accessories /and tools)
yes insurance wont be impressed /wont pay out if not using correct equip .
and i have been using saw without (any) mostly for 6yrs. so experience i agree is best but :
SAFETY FIRST !!! Insurance upto 15ft !! great -not
old eric new a guy who ;asked his WIFE to hold a piece of wood - and cut her HAND. :-( ouchh i bet he had gas heating instead of open-fire !!
also someone nearby had 'van with tools and keys' in up country track ..........insurance laughed /wont pay out as keys inside.
Sound Familiar ???????????????? sorry to be longwinded but feel all this thread is IMPORTANT...thanks
  • we all agree...................just personal circumstances/ comfort to suit - i know how it is....
thought it would benefit and remind us all !!

i nearly got ran over with my freind whilst strimming a grass verge/bank..........................scary inches off!!
worn hi-viz on this dangerous corner and would reccommend it near roads :-/

little red car came side-ways round corner @60mph !!!! i kissed the hedge and apparently shouted at my mate to 'move'. more later..........ty
  • YES , grip is most important , being aware where the saw / bar and chain are when you move it !

BiG Muscles also to enable holding the saw tight as they can be heavy and cumbersome,,,
also yes to pro-gard about chains . i always tend to use new/ and new saws .. no way would i use an old/or knackered saw i didnt know history about or checked over by expert/mechanic.

any advice on chain brake technicalities / use ? i guess use it as much as posible.

thanks to both of you for your honest and experienced replies gentlemen.
  • ok cheers. im never sure if its on or off when i start it up ! ,but it seemed unusual to leave it on / tight position when not in use . but then you have to put it 'on' again when you come to start it !!! thanks
  • ok thanks .
