Have just read a note from someone who spent 4 days in hospital on a drip caused by insect bites that got infected (while mowing).

The bacteria concerned has a 4 to 24 hour development phase. Skin becomes red and inflamed/swollen and sore then you get other sumptoms such as migrane, high temperature and shivering.

Treatment:

First, the doctor has to distinguish whether or not the skin inflammation is due to an infection. When it is difficult to know if the inflammation is caused by an infection, doctors sometimes treat with antibiotics just to be sure.

I always apply a DEET based roll on (from Boots) at one customer's site due to the number of horse/thunder flies that descend on me during hot/muggy days.

Hope this helps,

Bern

  • Cellulitis is a horrible condition and can be incredibly painful. It can be missed by doctors if there is a history of gout, which can have similar symptoms. Most people are unaware of the risks that infected bites pose, so this is a brilliant piece of information sharing. And sometimes you can't really tell if a bite has become seriously infected, most times an inflamed area around a bite dies down with the immune response from the body. Best thing is at all times to treat with antiseptic as early as possible. Having had to nurse a cellulitis patient, I would not wish this disease on anyone.

As a rule I tend to use Incognito insect repellant, it has been by far and away the most effective in malaria-ridden parts of the world and is supposed to be disliked by midges, too. Yet to test that one. Unlike DEET it will not melt birosand I stupidly sprayed some into my face (5am) and my eyes just whimpered a bit and then all was fine, because it is a natural product.
