Carburetter issues and E10 petrol

Some other petrol-powered equipment may not be compatible with E10 petrol including:

  • petrol-powered garden equipment or machinery, such as lawnmowers and chainsaws

Had an interesting conversation at the mower repair shop about older mowers, carburetter failure and new fuels.  He felt the pressure to go electric/cordless was only going to get greater now.   Hayter have a battery powered roller mower which swaps into the Toro range of cordless tools but anything on the horizon for Stihl?

I sometimes wonder if we are walking from one planetary disaster to another.

Battery power - Mmmmmm rare earth minings and disposal

Ethanol - mmmmmm where does all this sugar come from?

Don't get me wrong - I have always thought we should be taking care of the planet, just not sure if the solutions (cure) are really fit for purpose,or just a way to keep the money rolling in. I generally feel that if there is genuine carroty veg being used rather than the big ol wobbly stick,I'm more inclined to get on board. The elephant in the room is of course, too many people - endlessly ploughing on and on sucking the planet dry of it's resources, just cannot persist.

BUT,all the while people telling US what to do,fly here n there on their jets - then a pinch of salt is always  to hand.

As Mulder found out "Trust no one"

    • Flying is killing the planet cutting the grass with a petrol mower is not.  In the past 12 months since flying all but stopped the air is cleaner as we don't have a jet over us every 5 minutes.  I live in Shropshire and the difference is noticable so god knows how much nicer it must be in west London or anywhere near a airport.

E5 will become the “Premium fuel” and available on most pumps, but I do wonder if we are going to go back to the future and see Redex Type Petrol Additives In dispensers on garage forecourts next to the pumps as there’s were when I was a kid.

It is the current “Premium” higher octane petrol that won’t be readily available.

Advice on whether adding high octane super unleaded petrol or super diesel to your tank is worth the extra cost
  • My largest mower is a Scag 36 walk-behind, and the manual states that the higher octane fuel should be used, and I also run an old quad-bike (about 30 years old).  That means all the fuel I get is the higher octane, even for use in the smaller mowers.  I'll never know if I am wasting a few pence each time I fill the jerry cans up, but it is not much compared to the cost of the engines.

I have a Nissan NV200 diesel van so nothing will alter gore that at the moment.

However I also have a 2004 Daihatsu HiJet petrol and lpg pickup aka a Piaggio Porter pickup.

I stopped running it on lpg because the MOT tester wasn’t to happy about the rust on the lpg pipework and tank, also Calor moved the local depot and didn’t take the road fuel pump with them.

The owners manual says it needs 90 octane fuel, the E5 is 95, but the lpg is 112.

It runs a lot better on petrol and does not use a lot, when it was running on lpg it was ridiculously cheap to run.

I said to my wife last night it would probably run on paraffin if I could get it to start on it, so I’m not particularly worried that E10 will damage it.
