I see you have tidied the post up and ditched the link to a red top paper in favour of The Times, undoubtedly less controversial journalism!

I am a Hotmail user and have been ever since I had a email account, my other email addresses pass everything onto it. I can’t actually remember when we first had internet access at home, I think it was around nineteen years ago and that was when I opened my hotmail email account.

Maybe that is the crux of the matter, anyone using a original Hotmail account is likely to be over the age of forty and may well be much older than that, so this could potentially be a ageist issue rather than the precise email address.

Presumably if I used a Outlook or other subsequent Microsoft email address or one from a newer provider then I would be judged to be younger. But in amongst all this you have to actually tell them how old you are anyway.

I have tried a email address from my main website domain name, but after neigh on twenty years it is much easier to stick to the Hotmail account as the main email as it has multiple folders and a lot of history within it.

I have not changed the thread, just corrected a "cut & paste" error for the link from my iPhone.

My post was and still is based upon The Times article, having never read The Sun.

Some people change or drop email accounts regularly like they do Phones. I believe if you have a dedicated (personal or business) email domain you are more likley to be around longer or more 'accountable' and presents better for a business.

Using a functional email client provides much better control of emails, archiving, searching along with many other benefits. It is alsmost possible to run a business using office/outlook 365 etc.

Unfortunately, Hotmail has a bad reputation due to the links to scams, I believe.

Sorry, I must have gone astray reading the story somewhere along the line.

One of the red top papers also accused Admiral of increasing insurance quotes based on people's names as well, so hence my comment about a double whammy for people with certain names as part of a Hotmail email address.

We already know postcodes are a important issue regarding the cost of insurance,  choice of email address or your name is pushing it a bit though.

Having said that, in the past there has been accusations that some employers reject job applications and CVs from people who corrospond through Hotmail.

Work wise things seem to have changed regards using mobile phone numbers rather than landline numbers. To be honest though I think most people store numbers now and don't pay much attention to the actual number.

The idea of paying for a number that keys as 0800GARDEN or as a memorable number like taxi firms seems very dated.

Indeed email displays names rather than the full address and entering a part name will bring up a list to choose from. It is rare that you need to type a full email address and may not even notice who the provider is.

Times fo change though,  I don't have a Wannado email address anymore!

Whenever I receive an email from an unknown source I always look past the alias and check the source email address ( our email clients allow us to configure what information is shown for each email)

I tend to be suspicious of unknown Hotmail or gmail address, but Spam picks up most.

      Wannado - weren’t they a French isp ?

  • I think there is a perception (by some people) that a hotmail address is not considered to portray a professional image. Perhaps that's why they are penalising hotmail users?

Rightly or wrongly, I think that perception is true and may also extend to gmail addresses.

I’ve also read several articles over the years recommending that businesses do not use such email domains, but here I’d suggest for the insurance article we’re talking more about ‘personal’ email addresses ?

I worked for a guy who gave his home address correctly as 33, but altered it to 33B for his home based business address.

His explanation was that people would associate 33B with a office or business unit address, he thought this presented a better image for his business.

Google Street View blows that out of the water as people can just enter the address and have a look.
