I think the answer has just been announced on TV where the Health Minister said you can only go to work if it absolutely necessary.

As garden maintenance is not "absolutely necessary" I presume it is against the law to carry out this type of work.

My daughter works for the NHS, and she told me this morning that refrigerated containers have been delivered to her hospital for the storage of dead bodies. The moral here is to avoid ending up in one at all costs.

The only thing you need to refer to is the Cabinet Office guidance.  That hasn't changed since it was issued on Monday to coincide with the PMs statement so yes, we can work.  Gardening can't be done from home......

    • Simple answer - no.

The advice from the beginning was this -

      5. I’m not a critical worker and I can’t work from home. What should I do?

If you cannot work from home then you can still travel to work. This is consistent with the Chief Medical Officer’s advice.

Critical workers are those who can still take their children to school or childcare. This critical worker definition does not affect whether or not you can travel to work – if you are not a critical worker, you may still travel to work provided you cannot work from home.

Anyone who has symptoms or is in a household where someone has symptoms should not leave their house to go to work and should self-isolate.

Verification to prove you need to go to work is not required. Anyone needing to travel to work because they are unable to work from home is permitted to do so. You can carry ID with you if you wish but are not obliged to.

      6. How can I find out if my work is essential or not?

The government is not saying only people doing “essential” work can go to work. Anyone who cannot work from home can still go to work.

Separately, there is a list of critical workers who can still take their children to school or childcare. Provision has been prioritised for these workers.

Every worker – whether critical or not – should work from home if they can but may otherwise travel to work.

Current draft plan being circulated - believe it is accurate but subject to confirmation

It should have being circulated in the first instance to provide much needed clarity .

i.e construction workers , landscape gardeners and other outdoor workers (must not) go to work .

We were crying out for clarity 2 months ago .

        •  Correct. I emailed my MP at the very start and got no reply.

I would say that the category of ’landscape gardeners’ is probably linked to construction workers as landscape gardening is also at times building work, such garden walls and hard landscaping. Also it is different if you work for a firm where you have to work together.

Most of us are Gardeners, not Landscape Gardeners and most of us work alone.

All the local Councils around my area have continued grass cutting. I would suggest that if we were not supposed to be working, that they would have stopped working themselves, given how in tune with rules and regulations they are and how hair triggered they are on these issues.

There has even been Government guidance on what to do when sharing vans, with advice on driving with the windows down.

I have to say that I am tired of all this navel gazing. As I posted above, we were told very clearly that anyone who could not work at home could continue working if they could maintain social distancing. I have fulfilled all these requirements.

It was clearly stated by the Government that ‘The government is not saying only people doing “essential” work can go to work. Anyone who cannot work from home can still go to work’.

      • Since when did we adopt kilometres?

        • as a non landscape style gardener i must say it has been good to keep working in a relatively safe manner. my customers certainly consider me to be in that third tier of workers. somewhat below the nhs/care/ emergency services/ then food retail staff/post/delivery/bin emptiers and so on, but safely done and lower risk than these occupations of course
