Calculating building material quantities guide

Our Apprentice is nearing the end of his course and we were reviewing his work, project notes and work experience log and came across the following useful little crib sheet in his folder from Wickes: CALCULATING BUILDING MATERIAL QUANTITIES (he's obviously been busy ;-)

I'm sure lots of people have their own preferred mixes etc depending on local conditions / supplies etc and have not read it all or suggest it is 100% accurate, but strikes me as a useful starting place for calculating those first time jobs and/or doing quick estimates.

  • Good lead, thank you.
You may also find this extremely useful; pavingexpert.com. Free advice on a multitude of topics for landscapers.
Also Spons estimating costs guide to small ground works, landscaping and gardening. About £30 from Amazon. It's not been reprinted for 5 years though.
Spons external works and landscape price book 2013 from about £100 is the industry standard (as I understand it) for landscape projects of any scale.

For Spons small works there has been a 2nd edition dated 2009 or 2010, but main metric is contractor rates which you would use your own rates for anyway.

It's the productivity rates and structured pricing approach that makes it so useful, as material pricing would always be revised for a quote...

What's interesting is looking back on an old 2004 book the average landscape contractor rate in use ( exc profit) was £18.00 p/ hr back then
