Cable fix

Anyone used these?  Described as a  Dog Leg Z Cable end (Amazon),  it appears to screw onto the broken end of the cable so it can be re-fixed to the throttle/clutch/gear handle.  At £2.60 each I will get a few for the toolbox. Would be a lot quicker to fix on the job than sourcing a cable. I am just concerned with whether they are up to the job.

  • I'd treat them as a temporary repair until a replacement cable Is fitted. Might not work for every cable break, but worth keep in the toolbox.

Terminal strip/block 71p at Toolstation. I always keep a spare mower drive cable in my van.

  • They look good but the cable tends to gradually pull through.................. I got round that problem by attaching a "solderless nipple" (they're on Ebay) to the cable where it exits the Z cable end....... the best ones to use are listed under "Lambretta solderless nipples" and they're tightened up with a spanner and allen key............. once they're clamped up, the cable will never shift.

Back in 1970's one of my mates had a Hillman Imp, for those of you unfamilar with these cars the engine is at the rear, the accelerator cable snapped and we replaced it with electric fencing wire as a quick fix. Electric fencine wire was always a go to for a quick fix for replacing snapped cables, but would only last a few days, along with the terminal blocks that Honey Badger recommends.

A quick fix-that a retired farmer taught me. Like I said I always carry a spare mower cable.

  • A useful replacement for a broken inner cable is to use a bicycle inner brake cable................ they come with a different nipple at each end and one of those 2 nipples will usually fit the machine................ you then cut off the one you don't need and replace it with the"Z cable end" (with the additional solderless nipple)   I've found it atually makes a permanent repair and can save a fair bit of money by not having to replace the complete cable.

Sounds like a good plan to repair a multitude of machine's!

  • Prices may vary depending on machine, but aftermarket cables for my 'fleet' of Honda HRs are about £5/6 with next day delivery from Amazon. Hardly worth trying to bodge a cable at those prices.
