Has Buxus sempervirens in it's many forms, now become the Lonicera nitida of gardens, just another amenity plant or filler?
My view has been formed over the last thirty years and, yes based on selling thousands of them.
Some 9 years ago, my then employer sold many, many to the travelling community. They would buy them, as they were perceived as high value, and then take them, door to door, around the likes of St Geoges Hill, Weybridge etc. etc. With their spiel on the doorstep, "We've got these left over from a Landscape job, you can have them for £???, but they sold them all.
Again and again, they came back and bought more, some 4-5 times a week.
Now Topiary has it's place, in some gardens and can look great. However to use it in every garden can appear to be uninspired and borin.
So have Buxus Balls et al become the lazy option, with so many beautiful shrubs that are commercially available as a far better alternative?

Given that I spend my working life working with plants on events I know that when we and the client get it right it really does make a difference. We don’t always get it right but great looking plants help to overcome errors, omissions and help to create additional interest.
