  • Hi, yes it's pretty straight forward you get a landline number which literally diverts straight to your chosen mobile number. Most of the mobile companies do it now, they are called virtual landlines. Who is your mobile with?

  • O2. I've been looking and can't see O2 offering this sort of service. I think Vodafone might offer it but I'd rather stay with O2 for now.
Do they have to come and install the landline at the address?
  • No as it is not an actual landline, it is just a landline number that literally goes straight through to your mobile. Other option would be to speak to your landline provider and ask about getting a divert on that. Vodafone and Orange provide the service. There are non-mobile related companies that do it, do a google search for 'virtual landlines' and you will have a long list of options. Im sure the cost was around £10-15 a month per number, but not 100% on that.

  • Do they charge a premium? I'm wary of phone deals that end up costing you money, or putting customers off with charges to call you. The 0845 etc. numbers are a real con.

If you don't want clients calling the home phone, then just give out the mobile number? I've done that for at least ten years now, and had no problems. I know there used to be a lot of talk about not trusting a business that only used a mobile number, but that's long gone. The scammers all have 0800 numbers, websites, and official-looking accomodation addresses now.

  • The two main mobile companies that provide this service are as far as i know vodafone and orange. I know orange charges £10 pcm for a landline number of your choice if your mobile contract is with them, and that is it. Vodafone include upto 5 landline numbers within one of their business tariffs. As afr as I know this is it. With regards to other companies that provide these services I don't know how they go about it, just make sure you read the t&c's. Yes you are right about a lot of the scammers looking the part, although I find that a lot of people still call my landline, especially the older generation.

  • Hmm. If customers ring the business 'landline' number would their bill show up as a local, or the higher mobile charge?

  • That I don't know. But would be interested to find out.

  • Would Skype be able to provide what i need?
I was having a look and don't know how good their service is.
  • My business 'land line' is a local code number charged to callers at local rate - the number is provided and hosted by TTNC (The Telephone Number Company).

Costs me a flat £18 per month and can be diverted to whatever number I like at no extra charge (mobile, another landline, wherever)...

    Worth a look Steve.

  • Calls charged at "local rate" do cost the customer more, don't they? I may be wrong, but these premium services either cost you, or the caller.

I pay no extra for any fancy services, and haven't had a complaint in over ten years (probably nearer 15 years) that I only list my mobile number. I don't want my home number given out, although I appreciate that larger companies might need an office number. It's really not been an issue that I've ever felt I need to pay my phone company yet more money for - £18 per month is more that I pay for my home phone service!
