Bulb Mould

I've had a large delivery of spring bulbs which I have stored in my garage as I do each year whist I put them all in. This year, however, the remaining bulbs are developing a blue bloom on them - mould, I assume. The culprit. I am guessing, is the changed conditions in the garage due to me moving the boiler into there from the kitchen. If so, my fault. My question is - are the bulbs still going to be OK? They are not soft, just a bit blue and dusty.I will be using my shed in future - once I have made it vermin-proof!

  • Thanks Paul

I do roughly the same with bulbs I lift, but these were bought in from a nursery so I thought they would be OK to store for a couple of weeks without having to do anything with them...
  • having worked in the retail side for a number of years, I can assure you that the blue bloom, while not great and caused by excess humidity in your garage isn't drastic, as long as the bulbs aren't soft.

I would always try storing them off the ground (wooden pallets are good), and using them as soon as possible, if they have developed a bloom.
  • Thanks Claire, very reassuring:) A relief to know I've not wasted them.

I did store them off the ground, but I guess the air's just too wet in there now :( And short of planting 24 hours a day, I can't get them in any faster!)

Another alternative is a dehumidifier, but that just seems excessive and expensive. Finding somewhere else to keep them seems to be the only way forward for next year.
