Brushcutter

I need to buy a brushcutter that will handle brambles and nettles effectively on fairly large sites (1/4 acre upwards).I'm happy to pay out once for equipment that will last a few years rather than cheap and cheerful stuff that needs lots of cosseting on site.Any suggestions, experiences or things to look out for welcome!

  • The stihl fs450 is a good bet bit pricey as its nearly £800. but if looked after it should last you indefinatly if it doesent get nicked first! If you have a look at the other stihl brushcutters you may find a less powerfull one that will suit your needs. have you thought about a small flail mower, have a look on ebay, there is a turner flail mower 22" cut i beleve less than £500 and that will cut through more.

Agree that STIHL are a good make that will last for a long time, parts costly though but have a couple of brushcutters/strimmers along with other equipment & build quality excellent.
    Cheers
  • You nearly never need parts for STIHL.

    you need a Scrub-cutter on the end of a km130r engine (combi-system)

they only need grease on the gearings like hedge-cutters and blade maybe sharpening.

try hot-frog or world-of -power. frjones and sons or GUSHARTS in the north.

excellent with normal strimmer end and 180 degree pole hedge -cutters / cant beat this system for versitility versus cost....
  • What more can you say – I got the 345rx on Pro Gard's recommendation specially to do a lot of saplings. With the three point blade on it does 1” easy and 2” with two or three hits, but then it would with a 45cc engine (like to try the 53cc) The AVS is very impressive. which is important. I was also looking forward to the cruise control but for some reason mine's only got one fixed setting - at about a third of full revs. Maybe that's how my local dealer got it for £550 when rrp is £750, I don't know.

My previous one was a Hayter 25cc that has a Muryama engine. I've been using this for five years, still starts first time, brilliant engine – but bits fell off the guard in the first year and the bump button went, I replaced the bumper again last year, was very careful with it, and it lasted two weeks – ridiculous for an otherwise good machine.
