As tragic as it is, its a bit extreme to remove 200 trees unless they definately are all in a dangerous state, but I would think that would be pretty unlikely.

I agree H&S has gone to far with this what has happened to common sense. As accidents are a way of life and sometimes no one is to blame apart from the man upstairs. I think sometimes if he picks your number out of the big lotto machine there is not alot you can do. Maybe the next time a lorry driver hits a cyclist and kills them will they ban lorries?

I must be be missing something mate, Iv'e read it 3 times and dont get the justification for felling 200 trees. Are they diseased ?
I can only assume the LA & Parish Councils had not done & recorded a Duty of Care with performing tree inspections and therefore there must be justification for this..that's how I read it.
It's become a very hot issue in the last two years with, for example, very specific guidelines being issued by RICS to Property & Open Space Managers. Partly driven by Risk Management and several well publicised incidents.
Three years ago I had to get my Basic Tree Inspection and Survey ticket to satisfy the needs of our commercial agents. Every 12-18 months I have to do a site Tree Survey and provide a subjective report :-(
One of our trucks was driving through Camden last week and it hit a cherry tree which resulted in the cherry tree breaking and falling down. The first I heard of it was today when we got a bill through from Camden council for £900. When I spoke to my transport manager today, I got the full story. The driver had never left the highway, he had caught branches that were hanging over the road and this in turn had pulled the tree down. Our response to the council was that maybe you should maintain your trees better and also what if the tree had fallen on somebody and killed them. It will be interesting to see what their next response is
Ask to see their 'last' tree survey/report and check google street view ;-)
