Blowout

Had a lucky escape last week, driving home after work with a trailer full of green waste, just come off the motorway when the rear tyre blew at 35 mph(doing 60 seconds earlier).Anyway the point is that the van had been making a strange rumbling sound at speeds over 60 for a week before the blowout, had checked tyre pressures and a visual check but nothing visibly wrong so convinced myself it was a wheel bearing and would get it seen to at the weekend.Unfortunately for me my better half was with us when it blew and she had been telling me all week to get it checked,so got a right ear bashing that night and silence the next day(every cloud has a silver lining!)
In closing anyone out there with similar symptoms don't put it off may not be as lucky as me(new tyre £80)get down to your local wheel shop

  • Lucky you wasn't going quicker Paul, how did it handle when it blew?

Watched an artic lorry shudder to a smoking stop after a blowout on his front drivers side wheel, looked like it took some taming..

  • Luckily for me it was the rear tyre Andy apart from the loud bang and scream (from my other half not me ....honest)it wasn't that dramatic, just hit the breaks and pulled over immediately have had blowouts before....front tyre far more difficult to control...so knew what to do.

  • Blowouts are terrifying, its worth reading up on how to handle them - having had one at 60 on the M62 after hitting the central reservation (was knocked onto it by a non indicating foreign vehicle), its terrifying, and if you dont know what to expect, very easy to make the wrong decision at speed. I did not have a clue and very nearly lost control.
