Bitumen Emulsifier and timber

Does anyone have any experience of using bitumen emulsifier on oak sleepers. I have a retaining wall and was considering painting the back of the sleepers with some bitumen emulsifier to prolong their lives. I don't want it to seap through or alter the characteristics of the oak though. Normally we just clad the back with plastic but thought that bitumen might be a better alternative. Any thoughts?

  • Prolong their lives? Oak sleepers will outlive all of us!! :)

  • i never put anything on the back of timber that will hold the moisture. Wood breathes and putting plastic or a coating like that will hold water in. If its oak it wont need it

  • Surely if it is on the back filled side it will stop water getting in rather than holding water in?

  • better to have a loosefill to allow water to drain away and let the wood breath. all you are doing is holding moisture against it and reducing its life
