Bird poo

A commercial site I look after has had a kestrel move in up high near the entrance to the building.

The owners are happy for the bird to be there but the issue is bird poo on the block paving by the entrance. They know all the time it is there it is going to be an issue but have asked me to clean the area when I visit just to stop it looking really bad.

As this is a commercial site there is no outside water tap for my Karcher so I have used the stihl battery pressure washer which cleans it up about 50% but still leaves a white, chalk like coating on the block paving. I have tried do it with washing up liquid as well as scrubbing with a wire broom but I'm not completely happy with the finish using these methods. Also this is a bit of a faff having to lug a 25 litre container with water in and set up the pressure washer and suction hose.

What I want to know is there something I can use in a Knapsack Sprayer that I can apply to the area that will clean it up. Or any other advice on how to clean it.

Thanks

  • Try sodium hypochlorite at 50 %  dilution in your knapsack that will move it and rinse with clean water.

Sodium hypochlorite is available from farm shops/ suppliers very inexpensive under £20 for 20/25lt drum.

    • wonder if that might discolour the blocks and as its by the entrance, might not look so good.    Best to do a test on corner somewhere to check

      • Graham, have used hypo for years on a variety of materials. Leaves no residue and will not stain, bird poo is highly acidic with a ph of about 3.5, hypo is alkaline with a ph of around 13 so will neutralise the acidic properties of the bird poo and remove it.

          Thank you Peter

          I will look into this

          • James, if you don't want to buy a large drum of hypo which by the way is brilliant for cleaning slabs. Buy a 1lt of good quality household bleach which is also sodium hypochlorite, it won't be as strong as hypo bought from a farm suppliers which is around 11% and don't dilute brush on rather than spray and rinse after 10 mins. Let me know how you get on.

        • It can discolour though depending what you use it on. Tarmac for example turns a pink and fades to beige which obviously doesn't go down well

  • Block blitz is pretty good on block paving and not much labour to apply, dunno if it would cope with that though

It looks as if it is just above its favourite perch? If so you could just encourage them not to sit there by fixing some of these https://www.travisperkins.co.uk/guttering-accessories/defender-plas...

    Will the URL work???

      Thanks

Adam, yes this would work but the building is 3/4 floors high so I wouldn't be able to fix them without a cherry picker plus the owners are quite happy to have it there as it's home and would just like the bird poo cleaned up as best as possible for now.

I will try the bleech/hypo on it for now
