BEWARE! Internet fraudsters!

I am just of the phone with my bank. I have been done by internet fraudsters. In the region of £600 from several of my accounts. They had full access to my accounts - private and business. Money was transfered out of my savings accounts into current so as to gain access to it and transfer it to themselves!!It's obvious stuff but don't become despondant because it always happens to other people. DON'T open emails from unfamiliar names, certainly DON'T reply to them. DO make sure all firewalls are active. DO make sure you're computer is regularly scanned for viruses and the like. DO change passwords regularly.Make sure you do all this sensible stuff and don't get caught out.

Sorry to hear that Neil and thanks for pointing this out.

I too received an email from someone who wanted to book our gite for three weeks in September. A quick Google of the email address reinforced by instinct that it was a scam.

Because my email address is openly advertised on the internet I get a lot of spam so I'm always cautious when receiving emails.
  • Sorry to hear, I really hate thieving.

Basically, never ever open an email from a bank unless it is one you are specifically expecting.
  • That is horrible. To be honest I don't open e-mails from people/organisations I'm not familiar with.
  • This is the main reason why I avoid online banking.
When you watch an eleven year old hack into a secure network as I have it makes you very cautious.
  • I don't think the problem is in opening or reading an email, it's when a link is opened within that email that the scam begins.
  • They said it must have been an unknown email that I'd opened. Trouble is that my work email server doesn't seem to allow me to delete emails without them opening first. It's s strange sort of scrolling system one.com uses. What Thomas says is also true - if its not your bank just ignore it. Telephone banking is just as abused.

It's important firstly to recognise these scumbags are active all the time. Take all precautions possible. Much like Paul's crazy secure mains heated locks on his garage!! Cyber world is somewhat alien to many of us - that's the problem. Got all my money back from bank. Really annoying that this Russian sounding guy got away with it in the first place though.
  • I am pleased you managed to get your money back Neil.

Us too probably about 200 a day with attachments. It's nearly at the point of asking people to phone first. We never look at emails that go into the junk folder, which are automatically deleted. There must be some software that can deal with scammers like this.

It may well be worth upgrading your email to an Exchange based system which will apply proper filtering to your emails (unlike the filtering Email programs such as Outlook provide).

I upgraded a year ago and I used to receive about 75 junk emails a day and now I might receive 5 a week!

If you Google "Exchange Email" then there are lots of companies out there that offer it, I pay £50 per year for mine.

  • Thanks. I'll look into it but not sure I'm electronically literate to know whether I can change to that. One.com host my website and are my email server. I am very happy with the service they give me other than the inability to delete rubbish from inbox without opening.

p.s. When I think back there was one email a number of weeks ago that I received from what what appeared to be a friend - in fact it was a viral email that was sent to all of her address book. I stupidly fell for it and clicked the link. Thinking back it did look suspicious. You can always tell. NEVER EVER OPEN THESE DAFT, BUT AT THE SAME TIME CRAFTY, LINKS!!!
