  • Hi Matt,

Unfortunately we have just lost one of the most cost effective and better acting weed killers for lawns and amenity turf. That was Relay-P or Relay Turf and they were a 3 way mix of active ingredients which meant that they would control a wide range of weeds and if there was something that was a bit harder to control such as Speedwell or Selfheal, you could mix in some straight 24-D to 'pep' it up a little.

Now, for general lawn weeds, we are recommending a product called Thrust which comes in a 5L and you use 3.5L/ha. This means that it would cost around £40.00 per hectare or 40p per square metre, but the downside is that it already contains 24-D, so you would not be able to add extra to help control the tougher weeds.

If you have weeds such as Trefoil or Speedwell, it might be worth looking at one of the newer products such as Interfix or Praxys, but these are more expensive.

I have included links to our section on the website that has a wide range of lawn and amenity turf herbicides and it is always worth remembering that we do offer the Trade Silver prices to our customers from LJN. If you ask us for a Trade Silver account, we will supply you with your own individual login to the website and you will then see the prices at the reduced Trade Silver prices.

    Cheers Ollie

    • Thanks Olli, Do you not stock it anymore or its been taken off the market?

Does thrust tackle the likes off dandelion, clover , buttercup, Daisy etc?

      Many thanks
      • I believe they stop selling this year, but when I don't know! It needs to be used completely by next year!

    • Hi Ollie, is 40p per sqm correct? Should it be per 100 sqm? A few of my maintenance clients have asked about lawn care for next year so I'm trying to work out some costings! Thanks Paul
      • Hi Paul,

Yes you are correct, I was getting mixed up with decimal points! It would be 0.4p per sqm or 40p per 100 sqm.

And Matt, we do not have any Relay-P left in stock and have moved onto the Thrust. This will do a very good job on dandelion, buttercup and daisy. All stocks of Relay have to be used yp by the 31st December 2016.

It is also worth bearing in mind that the newer range of lawn weed killlers such as Praxys and Interfix are not that much more expensive working out at around 60p-£1.00 per 100 sqm and these products are more effective against the tougher weeds such as micro clover or Trefoil.

        cheers Ollie

        • School boy error there Ollie :-)  Just as well I got my Relay-P when I did off you.

          • Thanks Graeme! The Thrust is a good replacement for the Relay-P though when you need some more!

    Hi Matt,

There is a reasonable choice of products available depending on your budget and type of weed to be controlled. As Ollie has mentioned Relay-P/T is being withdrawn - it can be sold till end December and used until Dec. 2016. It will be critical to apply the right product at the right time - let the weeds get away and grow beyond 2 leaf stage and your choices will narrow - see below. Chances are you will need a couple of different products in any case to cover all eventualities..

DEPITOX: All round budget spray for most seedling weeds inc. speedwell, thistle, buttercup. 3 applications a year. Works out at 2p per sqm
THRUST: good at Thistle, buttercup, ragwort, 4p per sqm
POLAX & PRAXYS : Strongest most effective weedkillers, low dilution for larger weeds, deep rooted weeds. one application a year

    • I use Re-Act which I find highly effective. Do you sell it, and how does it compare to Thrust on weed control and cost?
