Best ladders/tripods/ step for cutting high hedges and trees.

I have recently had a spate of tall hedges and medium sized trees to cut and was using a regular set of ladders with my stihl extendable trimmer. The issue with this was that the ladders were not very comfortable and I was off balance whilst trimming especially with such a long pole.

What does everyone reccommend for cutting tall hedges and  for example conifers such as Leylandii that can grow up to 20 foot or more.

Are tripods suitable?

TIA.

  • I'm happy with Henchman tripod ladders for most high hedge work. I find them light enough to move easily and stable enough to reassure me I can climb right up and wave an extended Kombi around.

Also have a Hi Step Maxi or Major (can't remember which) platform ladder. Doesn't come out often  - more difficult to move around and heavier. Really useful for getting to the top of tall hedges and leaning in to wide conifer tops to trim them. Platform is really stable.

  • Niwaki tripods for me ina garden. Light and easy to move. Can get right in to a hedge and lean out too . I feel safe on it . Worth every penny..

  • We use the Henchmans.  Very light and stable especially with the 3 independently adjustable legs.

I have used an 8ft Workware tripod ladder (borrowed) for the past few years but will probably buy an 8ft Henchman or 8ft Niwaki ladder. Both showrooms are not too far away to go and visit to look at each to help decide which to opt for.

I am interested to see first the mechanism for adjusting the leg of the Niwaki as it seems to be only a pressure pin and not an actual pin though both leg sections

The henchman also obviously has the flat step and knee slot and not a rung

I have the 16ft henchman and its a great bit of kit can get right into the hedge and its very stable.

  • I asked the same question a while back & the answer i got was' go for a tripod, the biggest you can.'

I now have a 3M Workware, with all three adjustable legs so that you can use it on really rough slopes/ steps. Mine came from Northern Arb & was about £250. Henhman are overpriced in my opinion

    Good luck

    • I've also got a "Henchman" copy. It is absolutely fine for all my needs. In fact it has helped me set a rule for how high I will work now. If I can't do it comfortably from the tripod, then I don't take the job. No messing around with other equipment, extension ladders etc, life suddenly became easier!

    • The 3 leg adjust workware/HPM ones don't have the top bar that the henchman does. Every time I use my henchman I use that bar, for grabbing, leaning etc, and find myself thankful I got the henchman version!

They can be had a lot cheaper than RRP via dealers.
