    Have ordered a few tonne of recycled from the local council.
    
    As the soil round here is mainly sand I think this would be the best option.

  Have you thought about using pelleted chicken manure?

  Anything moisture retaining, and you could supplement the feeding with a regular foliar spray - maybe Maxicrop or Phostrogen?

  We tend to use Levington's or Bowyers Blended Farm Manure, not cheap but is good, plastic is not included unlike the Council stuff. We were buying it for £2.85 / bag last year. RRP often 4.49 online even more.
