Battery mower for steep slopes

Looking for advice on a self propelled mulch / rear side discharge pedestrian mower battery powered. To be used on a steep slope that is cut cut along the slope not up and down. Currently strimmed every 2 weeks which takes around 90 minutes.

Due to the incline need positive traction as the mower will try to tip, so all wheel drive or diff lock required.

We have looked at the AS 2 stroke mowers but cost is prohibitive for one job.

Alternatively, any thoughts on a ' standard' 4 stroke mower with forced lubrication ? Been told ok going one way when the angle lets the oil remain in contact with the pump but in opposite direction the oil will be tipped away from the pump.?

    Fuel powered Flymo ?

    • Thanks John, but flymo not practical, need to mow along the length not up and down

Fair point Peter ,  I was thinking about the lack of oil sump but flymo can be erratic on the flat and can end up in top of your feet .

Don't know the grass height ,terrain or finish required

Ninety minutes how about a Stihl wheel kit to turn strimmer into a mower ?

We had a two roadside steep verges and successfully used the Stihl RMS239 -set it on highest setting and it worked well, its so light you can hold it in place easily. It looked so small in comparision with the verge but worked through it surprisingly fast.... as long as you didnt miss a cut, in which case it struggled a bit

  • I would use my Stihl RMA 2 RT on that job, it's a mulching only machine with a metal deck, normal type of duo handle, got a great deal on mine about 3 years ago, paid only £300 (latest variable drive speed model costs twice that now). Tend to use the AP300S batteries in it, always full power mode not Eco.  Self propelled, front wheel drive, think it's 46cm cut. It is powerful. Light enough to hold against a steep slope. Had loads of use from it attacking rough stuff, or slightly nicer lawns where I can get away with mulch cutting sometimes. Only thing I dislike is the rear wheel height adjuster is a long bar which can occasionally slip to the next notch on one side. Might modify it so can be locked into place somehow. The front wheel adjusters are ok.

  • Decided on an 21 inch ego which at 30 kg inc battery and a 7ah and 4ah battery and charger at £859 with 3 year pro warranty seems a steal. It will drive with one wheel off ground .
