Bank overdraft fees targeted in major shake-up

Banks and building societies will no longer be allowed to charge fixed daily or monthly fees for overdrafts.

In addition, there will no longer be higher fees for unplanned overdrafts than for arranged ones.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said the new rules would start by April 2020.

Bank overdraft fees in major shake-up
The changes will make overdrafts simpler, fairer and easier to manage, the UK financial regulator says.

I have never needed to use an overdraft facility. The odd thing is that when I might have needed one, many years ago, they never offered one. In recent years when I would never come close to having to use one, they gave me an overdraft facility without me asking for it. It just came as standard, but only it seems because they know I will never use it.

It seems that they only offer it to you when they are confident you won’t use it. I think when you are poorer they expect you to overdraw and so with no overdraft arrangement, they can hit you harder with the charges. It is like they are betting against you, knowing they will win.
