Bamboo root barrier

Hi All

Any recommendations of where to buy bamboo root barrier from please? It is so expensive! I need approximately 25m. It's coming in between  £175 - £200. Are there any alternative solutions to prevent the spread? Any advice really appreciated.

Cheers

Catherine

  • Good day. Catherine.

We specialise in bamboo removal, I've seen all sorts of different methods to stop the spread of bamboo and they're all limited or useless.
even planting in tubs is often inaffective. The pots degrade over time and split under the heave force of the bamboo rootball.
There are two ways to prevent the spread- steel sheet up to 1m in the ground, with 100mm above ground.

Gravel boards do not work, you need solid concrete strip again, 1m deep.
Rhizomes usually go 6-8" under the ground but when met with an obstacle, I have found ryhzomes 90cm beneath ground and have gone above ground by upto 9cm above,

Correct removal using mechanical excavation is the most affective way of removal. However, a herbicide can be used in some situations, but you must have a spraying ticket/ insurance as this is damaging to the environment and pets, etc,

THe only way I have seen that works is to dig a trench around 2' deep and fill it with concrete - effectively build a heavy duty concrete foundation underground right around it.

The other way would be to dig it out, and put a non-invasive variety in a year later... when you are sure the original one is 100% removed

  • Hi Catherine. You might be able to reduce the price of the barrier by shopping around. I presume if you are looking at 25m run that this is a neighbour's bamboo coming into your customer's garden. A root barrier should work pretty well but you may need to keep an eye on any rogue bits popping up and chop them off as needed. If it is your customer who has the bamboo, try to talk them into letting you remove all or most of it.

    Good luck.
