BALI ask landscapers not to drop prices

I am concerned that BALI have urged contractors not to drop prices in order to win work. Hort Week 18th September - BALI warns against Landscapers dropping prices. BALI should be educating its members on the need for cost control in order to maintain a healthy margin. By suggesting that contractors should maintain prices - especially in these trying times - smacks of price fixing. In light of today's revelations that major British constructions firms fixed prices, should we looking to adopt a sealed bid process for landscaping?

  • we should not be dropping prices !!

    - but it's 'easier said ,than done' !

ive kept prices the 'best i can' , but now i will charge as before, and hopefully increase again slowly.
(if i cant , my time is more precious & i need health insurance now and mortgage to be paid very soon ) never mind a 'pension' of some sort !!

I agree also that nobody should be looking to drop prices nor 'buy work' as BALI calls it.

I do think that there are many pressures in times of recession that are out of most contractors control. Price reduction isn't always a concious thing.

For example, many contractors will keep their rates the same but seek to knock time from the execution (I am talking construction here) and maybe not look to add a 'buffer day' as a contingency of over running.

I hope that the work we have done on here and on LJ - what does a gardener charge and what does landscaping cost, rates very high (No. 1 at time of writing this) on Google - has helped to educate clients as to what to expect.
