Arris Rails

Hi all, I live & work in the South East. Down here we use Arris rails on Closeboard fencing, usually with morticed posts. I am working this weekend up in Sheffield, putting up a new closeboard fence for my daughter. Now I know you lot up North do not use Arris rails & just use straight timber rails. I put up 3 bays for my daughter 18 months ago, but took the materials up to Sheffiled on the top of my van, I'm not doing that again, especially as there is even more materials.

.The supplier she is using don't even do morticed posts & no others locally do either. My question is, to you Northern guys, how do you fix the rails when putting up closeboard? Do you mortice the posts yourself or use brackets, or another way of fixing the rials up? I don't want to just nail up the rails onto the front of the posts as this will mean moving the gravel board even further forwards.

Thanks for any advice. Neil

Not from the North (Berkshire), I just cut a notch out of a blank post with a circular saw, tidy up with a chisel and paint on tanalized treatment.

    • Cheers HB.

      • Touch-up treatment isn't a patch on pressure treatment, this will shorten the life of the posts.

Like your thinking. Where can I get a shrinking ray and where is the nearest pressure treatment factory? So i can take it to a job. If its sold at toolstation for around £20 I'm in!

          • Our local TP used to actually tanalise stuff to order, but no longer sadly.  My answer is not to cut the posts if we can help it.

          Sorry couldn't help myself!

I was led to believe that tanliseing chemicals were used in the pressure treatment process. Since pt does not penetrant all the way into timber its worth topping up preservative on cut ends.

          What's your take on this?

          • Can't do any harm!

  • Why?  Arris rails are rubbish.  Here in the SW we use cant rails, much better.  If local suppliers don't do arris rails, why would they do posts for arris rails?  Take the arris rails back and do it like the locals do.

    • Haha thanks Tim, I haven't gotten the arris rails, as they don't do them. I'm asking how you fit the cant rails. Do you mortice them in, do you use L brackets or??

      • Screwed to the face, like Dave F's picture below, although we do sometimes use recessed concrete.
