Hi Stephen, I had a look into that a few year's back. I spoke to my local apprenticeship place. Had a meeting with them, then interviewed three lads at home with the Mrs. Two were very keen. I picked my favourite and was allowed to take him on a play date for free. He's a good lad an engineer now. The biggest problem i found was not enough customers would pay enough money for him, to make it worthwhile, in hindsight I should have sacked the customer's because they all gone now anyway.
Yes we found the apprenticeship service to be very helpful.
I took one on... well it went the other way, I took him on, then put him on an Apprenticeship - hes now a Painter and Decorator :(
I took another one on, she is still with me and it was the best thing ever - suddenly we can get through near enough twice as many gardens - or bill substancially more a day in a day on large gardens
Your local college of knowledge is the best place to start - there's some good incentives going at the moment for taking one on for 3 days a week.
Good luck
