Apple iPhone 5 to support online payments

It looks as if Apple intend to implement an online payment systems into the new iPhone 5 by using 'near field computing' - this appears similar to the RFID swipe chip payment cards already in use by Barclays in the UK (as I understand it)  The phone is simply 'swiped' over the merchants terminal in the shop etc

On a different approach, did you know that there is already a card swipe addon unit for the iPhone 4 that is compatible with Intuit's Quickbooks accounting package in the US ?

Not sure if it will make it here, but it clips onto the port at the bottom and is of a 'jacket' design (ie it encompasses the phone like a protector). Once the app is activated the card is simply swiped and online verification takes place. This could be a cheaper method than using merchant card terminals or easier than other online payment systems.

Times and technology are moving fast and it looks like Apple are pushing it forwards...

    See here : http://www.onlinesocialmedia.net/20110201/iphone-5-news-visa-testin...

Its a way off yet, Apple have a very carefully constructed product marketing schedule to ensure you get "hooked". The rumours suggests an Apple iPhone 5 annoucement in the Summer.

To wet everyones appetite and get developers working, it has released details of new likely features, but I expect it will be later this year or next year...

They'll want to get the iPad 2 out (due soon) before they push on with the iPhone 5. Also I suspect they will lay the foundations for this technology in the iPad's new o/s so tthe iPhone release will be 'trouble free'.

They are so good at driving consumer desire to own the latest product :-)

  • I fancy one too but im not going to pay the huge amount they want for one,we run apple computers and have done for the 12 years I have found them to be spot on and trouble free ,but the price of the iphone is a step too far for me.

You can still get new 3GS for ~£60 on a £35.00/18month tariff on o2....(cause i just got another one...)

The 4's are still expensive, but past experience shows the price drops....
