We had a presentation about them during a LJN meeting up at Stihl's HQ back in February ( just before lock down ) and clearly of interest on many counts if you have a large investment in their gear and being used by employees. It was something that dropped off my radar ( but thanks Darren 👍 ).

An outright purchase and connect via BT and then thru to Stihl if you want. Main concern would be finding good locations to secure them.

The App and info looked good.

A concept to watch as more and more goes 'online'...

We have dupicates of most tools and we just grab what we need each day depending on how many vans are going out and who's going where.  So I never really know if one machine is getting a lot more use than others or even which ones are still under warranty and which aren't.  As we are almost all battery, I don't know how useful the maintenance side would be but I suppose from a greasing and sharpening point it gives you something to aim for.  Might stick some on the various mowers too.

  • An interesting idea which could be very useful if you've gangs using multiple machines............... the way tools are often stacked/thrown in a van, can't help wondering how long before the sensor is broken though. .

They are encased in resin and the mounting lugs using some form of polymer plastic. Stihl appear to have stress tested them with real life contractors. So suspect they would last or they'll have lots of warranty claims !

Maybe I am reading the description wrongly, but this seems like twenty quid well spent, just for the ability to know and log how long a machine has been running.  I am tempted to get one for my zero turns just to know how much I use them each week and to be able to open an app at night and know I need to order service parts for the next weekend.......

Thinking about it this is your "warranty" within 5 years and every machine will potentially have one built-in.  I bet one of the conditions of use of the app is that Stihl gets the data for free.....

Think I will get one for a play.

    Good post Thanks

I've ordered one today and will get it up and running and see what the Stihl portal is like and how the chip performs before moving forward and buying a load of them.  Will try and keep you posted.

    Received my first one today.

Fairly impressed.  Downloaded and registered the app, no problems.  It's actually very smooth and easy to set everything up.

Stuck the Smart Connector on an FS 94 - literally.  Take a picture of the bar code on the strimmer, and the Q code in the SC and that's it all registered and set up.  Run the machine and it starts logging the run time.  The app seems to be set up in such a way as to prompt you to take it to the dealer EVERY time you need a service item.  It is obviously intended to drum up parts sales for Stihl and service work for the dealer network.   I suspect I am right in saying that this is how Stihl will be doing warranties(possibly extended warranties?) in the near future.  Bluetooth seems to run off a replaceable (~yearly) battery and the sensor electronics are inductively coupled to the spark plug.  Can't see why this would not work on almost ANY 2 stroke device.  I think I will probably order a few more just for the fun of it - I love tech.  What would be awesome is if you logged a machine on the app and it gave you the part numbers and an easy way to order them just before they were needed......

I suspect the bigger the company and the more machines you have the more utility you will get out of these gizmo's and accompanying app.

Has the ability to log the machine usage time, the staff work time per machine and the last known position of the machine.

I hope they don't couple to the spark plug, all our gear is battery :-)
