Hi Adam, have you thought about fixing it yourself? Since it's the labour cost that kill's it.
I've got a 16yrs Honda hrd536 were the gear box has gone clicky, I'll be fixing that my self.
I always run two mowers one roller and one wheeled. I recently replaced the wheeled one for a Honda hrx537 hy, very happy with that.
There's a guy on eBay who fixes them for £150. By the time you add up the price of the clutch, gear wheel and oil seals it's not actually a bad price.
However, if you're anything like me, you'll begrudge paying £1 more than you have to if you can fix it yourself!
if you can fix it yourself mabe worth looking on fleebay or the likes for one for sale spairs and repairs you might be lucky
There's a roller and gearbox assembly on eBay for £45 including delivery. They're not that tricky to take off if you have a basic tool set.
Trouble is Sean, David and Honey Badger.... I am a spannering dyslexic - if it can go wrong it will, with bells on.
I've found a 2016 HRD 536 for sale locally at about the right price - assuming it is OK, I will be up and running again on Monday :)
Fair enough 😆. Out of interest, do you know if it was the splines on the gearbox, or the female splines on the rollers, that broke?
The splines on the roller, so the left hand roller doesn't go round, but apparently the splines on the gearbox have rusted or somehow fixed themselves to the gearbox, the repair shop werentalkeing of having to angle grind them off
Don't put yourself down it's not too difficult to repair garden machinery, they're relatively simple.
If you buy a old machine you may have the same problem or worse.
The hrd536 I brought was of a customer that had it from new, it wasn't abused and in excellent condition.
Honda roller mowers are notoriously crappy for gear boxes.
Hasn't your repair shop heared of the greatest rust striper known to man 'coke a cola'! A grinder? Animals!
I've had some stuck on before (HR mowers from the '80s!), but they always come free with some whacking with a rubber mallet! They can become economically unviable to repair through a workshop though, this is where I pick my mowers up from, for free! I normally salvage the engine and other parts and put them onto other mowers.
Thank you all, I picked up a new (to me) one this afternoon, complete with a dealer receipt for a service last winter for a whole £145 :) :)
You are all nearly convincing me to have a go at repairing the old one.... to have as a spare.
