Read through all 5 pages of posts. Interesting, same sort of posts Ive seen often on LJN regarding charging. So glad domestic work is a tiny % of my sales. Like you say Mike, and p@$$!^g against the wind at every turn, springs to mind :-(
  • I stick to the Pistonheads forum specific to my car, but even that is a pretty nasty place to be sometimes. Pistonheads is steadily going downhill, and not from a particularly high starting point!

To be fair, most of the rates quoted (I only read the first page as it was enough for me) aren't unreasonable when they are talking about unskilled, uninsured, cash-in-hand workers, or for cheap areas of the country. My Mum still pays £10 per hour in Cornwall, and the guy does a perfectly good job, so they aren't all cowboys at the lower end of the pricing market.

I think you need to take the comments on that thread with a pinch of salt.

PH is good example of potentially great forum populated by a large number of 'idiots' waving their genitals in the air, saying look at me, look what I do/say/drive when a lot are wanna-be 17yr old Corsa drivers.

Like Paul, I suspect, I rarely now participate. It's just not worth the cr*p that flies around

Comments re: Gardeners just reflect the mentality of a large % of the members and gives an indication of the 'real' people behind the posts.

Example - who would go a forum and state they have £50k - £75k to spend on a car and want to know what to choose from a bunch of people they do not know?  Why on earth would you do that other than to try and get 'some on-line street cred' ! Most on there can't even drive I suspect !

A lot of the good members have moved on to specific, dedicated/private forums where sensible discussions can be held without silly behaviour.

If you want to see good (bad ?) examples of how nasty or bullying a forum can be go there and look.

With any similar type of forum, there is no 'validation' / no real membership. You can be who or what you want to be depending on how much you can bluff it. I guess that's true generally of the webby thingy - that's why I like to see to whom I am conversing or sharing information with on LJN (ie a validated, business related 'member' etc )

  • Had to write a reply, tight arsed people who don't want to pay £15 ph or less!!!, HNY to them lot! Soapbox, I just did!
  • The problem is if you google ' how much does a gardener charge' the landscape juice thread comes in around 4th.

Where as the ill informed 'Martin money matters' and 'mums net' comes in before that with the majority of the posts saying £10 an hour is average!! where as in reality the price is nearer £20 per hr. This does cause our industry and many others huge problems.

LJ has been at the top for a long time now. There will be geographical variations too.

The bottom line is, if someone is looking for a gardener based on price only then they aren't the customers we want.

If someone looking for a gardening is basing their research purely on the views of the Mumsnet, Money Saving Expert and Piston Heads then they are, quite frankly, stupid ;-0)

  • That article on money saving expert is the biggest pile of crap i have ever read, they all seem to think £10 per hour is the going rate.

Phil, what can we do to ensure LJN stays at no1 on google?

If everyone linked to one of the following pages on Landscape Juice from their website it will strengthen their respective positions on Google.

What does a gardener charge (see page views to get a guage of how many times it's visited).

    What does a gardener charge?

What should I pay a gardener per hour?
