Anyone good on auto electrics ?

I need to get a 12v  supply to the rear of a Mitsibushi L200 Truck, with a peak load of 30A for a piece of equipment. Understand I can not use any of the existing wiring loom to pull this amount of power.

So need to run a dedicated, fused supply to some form of surface mounted 2 pin connnector (weatherproof). Thought of (ab)using a trailer plug/socket for this.

Anyone know:

- what cable I should use and how to specify it ?

- if I can  run direct from the battery terminals down thru the engine bay and along underneath on the chasis (in principle) - is this the way to do it ?

Hoping I can get our local garage guys to do it asap.....

  • you can run straight from the battery but it willneed to be suitably fused by the battery, you can get proper grey heavy duty 12v plugs on ebay
  • im thinking of doing the same or similar what do you need the power for?
  • through bottom of dash/engine compartment and hide under -side of carpet all the way along to rear of seats/ up side rear window would be better ... wont get damaged underneath ...

what for a light ?? you will need a switch somewhere i presume ? ask colin / or pg..
  • i had a bmw 525 tds until recently and it was getting a bit tired so i fitted a secondary battery in the boot to assist with starting. i got a cheap set of long jump leads and some battery clamps and run the batteries positive to positive negative to negative and the results were instant.

it was an automatic so i couldnt tow start or bump start

No, its for a spare snowex gritter, we need to run as soon as possible.

The lead will supply the power and the gritter has a return flylead that comes back into the van that has the speed and vibrator control unit.

Are there cut outs or blanks in the bulkhead that would allow a lead to pass thru without drilling ?
  • there are grommits all over a cars bulkhead so it should be possible to squeeze a pair of extra wires in there being careful not to burn the wires as they are pulled through due to friction

I was hoping to get the guys that do our services to sort it out, but wanted to be able to tell them explicitly what we needed. Have some ideas now. Thanks

get an auto sparky to do it. if you get the wiring wrong you could fk ur battery or ecu or both with a good spike of power which wil work out a lot more expensive than a sparky for an hour or 2.

depending what equipment you want to run you may be better to run a second battery so you dont get drained and charge it off second tow socket like they do on caravans that have 12v battery might be safest option

I don't think so, they state it has a 30amp peak at startup for the motor and vibrator unit

what wiring does the kit have? if it only needs one power source for motor and controls can you not rig it to run off the tow socket direct?

  • the thing colin is refering to is a split charge relay.

  • good / required battery in the back (if start up not too high get a lower amp one) strap it down in the back with the 2 rope hooks either side under floor in trunk...... small leads to control unit ... ??
