There's no need for a HIGH nitrogen fertiliser for new seed - really the focus should be on getting the roots to develop after germination which means a high phosphorous (P) fert is better. Nitrogen is only available for a short period (depending on the type of N and any coatings) so before the root develops the N would largely be lost in the soil and to the atmosphere....a pre-seeder fert higher in P can be sown at the same time as seeding or after seed has germinated with two true leaves...a NPK of 6-9-6 is what we offer so anything similar with N in single figures.
Hi. Thanks for your brilliant reply. I should of made it clear that it won't just be seeding a bare lawn. It will be overseeding an exsisting lawn. The high nitrogen I referenced was to try and bring that on as well as generally putting some essential nutrients in to the ground which may help overall.
But what I needed to know in more general terms was can I put a fertiliser down immediately after overseeding an exsisting lawn. Or do I have to wait for the new seed to germinate?
I would put a seaweed feed on one around 10%
In the spring as 1 renovation visit we would do a lighter scarify (heavy reserved for Autumn), aerate, seed and feed (granular phased release 3-4 months). Option of top dress. No weed control till Summer if conditions allow (certainly not this year!), otherwise autumn.
Go for something like a preseed fertilizer. The nitrogen would be too much for the seedlings, and mean they'd get swamped by the existing grasses, and mown before they're ready.
Thanks Tim. 👍
