PRO

Looking for ideas;

A 4 foot high, arris rail and closeboard fence built using concrete posts.

We need to add a further 2 foot high privacy screen (maybe trellis, maybe cedar slatted).

Cant' replace the exisitng concrete posts, can't install addtional posts into ground beside or infront of existing concrete posts.

So, considering 'clamping' new  wooden posts to existing concrete posts using stainless steel clamping straps (ie large "jubliee clamps") and then adding 'screens' between new wood add-on posts.

Anyone done similar or have alternative ideas ?

  • I would drill the posts & fix wooden extensions.  An sds drill will do it easily but drill the middle to avoid the reinforcing rods.   Are the posts slotted & do the panels run to the top of the posts ?

      Drilling not really an option in case they fracture (and posts are 'owned' by their neighbour) who do not want them damaged

      The fence is bulit using arris rails into concrete posts, so no slots other wise it would be easier as these (or similar) become an option) :3314738801?profile=original

  • Can you notch some timber posts and bolt through the arris rails?
  • I would never attach anything substantial to a fence owned by a neighbour.  A new neighbour could decide to take the whole lot down.  Those bracket clamps should be ideal

    • PRO

      The client has obtained written agreement due to the mutual privacy benefits.

      Those brackets are not suitable - as mentioned the posts are not slotted.

  • So maybe screw new posts through the boards & into the arris rails

    Could you put some inch square posts on the insides of the original post next to fence and maybe one in the middle to take some of the weight (not into the ground just to sit on top of the ground like legs) of the trellis and then use your jubilee type clips to stop the wobble and keep fixed?
