A Time and Motion Study Question

There is an airport in the middle of the jungle, and the runway is all grass, which means it has to be mowed every day.
The Facts:-
The length of the runway is exactly four miles long.
Two men mow this runway all day every day.
They use walk behind mowers which have an average speed of 2 miles an hour.
A “Time and Motion” (T&M) study man turns up to do some calculations, and has brought with him a surveyors wheel to do some measuring.
The men behind the mowers are told to start mowing at 10am on the dot. At the same time the T&M man starts to measure the distance from the first mower to the second, then back to the first, then back to the second, until both mower men have passed each other.
The average walking speed of the T&M man is 4.276 miles per hour.

The BIG QUESTION is , how far does the T&M man walk between 10am and the time the mower men pass each other

    4.276 miles.

    4 mile run way, 2 guys start at either end at 2 miles an hour so it takes them 1 hour to meet each other, another second to pass if you want to be pedantic.
    ATM guy walks at 4.276 miles an hour so after an hour, when they have met each other, he has walked 4.276 miles.

    What if an aircraft comes in? presumably this will divert/delay the mowers so the T & M guy will have to walk further.
