I took A-level economics in 1984. Failed, but took it!
Back then, the figures were that only two-thirds of men even reached retirement age. One third died without ever needing a pension. I think it was 60 back then, but might have been 65. Pensions were only ever meant to pay out for a few years at most.
We're now looking at average life expectancy hitting 100 within a few generations. Medical science is prolonging life at huge costs, but you have to pay for what could be 40 years of retirement somehow....
It's scary that we'll have to pay massive taxes to fund the new advances in medicine to keep us alive, but then we have to think about how to pay for all the people we've kept alive who want to retire...
