JCB coming on Wednesday so I can rip out the old hedge stumps; planning to walk round tomorrow sticking some canes in where I want trees, just need to decide which ones now (and how many pennies there are in the piggy-bank :( )
Mind you ... I heard on some Money Program on the radio today that interest rates will fall to 1% or 2% within the next 12 months, so armed with that knowledge I am certain that I can spend as much as I like, my Dear Wife can't complain, eh? :D

Betula pendula (silver birch) which preferred varieties?
Betula utilis var. jacquemontii (Himalayan birch) Variety 'Grayswood Ghost', 'Jermyns', 'Silver Shadow'??
All these are fairly similar I'd go for jacqmontii, in groups of 3, 6 ft apart, stunning!
Catalpa bignonioides (Indian Bean Tree) or Aurea variety brittle - easily wind damaged
Cedrus atlantica Glauca Group (Blue Atlas cedar) very similar to libani, wouldn't bother with both
Cedrus deodara (Deodar cedar) huge - give it LOTS of space!
Cedrus libani (Cedar of Lebanon)
Cercis siliquastrum (Judas Tree) Beautiful!
Cupressus sempervirens (Italian cypress) Variety? 'Green Pencil'
Davidia involucrata (Handkerchief tree) beautiful!
Fagus Sylvatica Purpurea Pendula (WEEPING PURPLE BEECH) Very striking, but can be temperamental to establish,and very slow
Fagus sylvatica pendula (Weeping green beech) Maybe Purple one is a bit too fancy! So a weeping green beech instead? faster and easier than the purpl one certainly!
Gingko bilbao (Maidenhair Tree) entertaining novelty prehistoric tree
Ilex (Holly) variety?? Golden king
Juglans regia (Walnut) need 2 for reliable fruiting. ultimately v large, and slow
Juniperus scopulorum (Juniper Exclamation mark!) Variety? 'Skyrocket' skyrocket is good
Koelreuteria paniculata (Goldenrain Tree)
Laburnum x watereri 'Vossii' (Laburnhum) Beautiful, plant lots in an arch, stunning!
Liquidamber Styraciflua (LIQUIDAMBER) 'Worplesdon' is best for autumn colour
Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip Tree)
Malus x zumi 'Golden Hornet' (Crab apple) varieties? golden hornet is good, bright yellow crabs, very heavy cropping
Morus nigra (Black mulberry) Can be a bit temperamental, not absolutely bone hardy here

Populus tremula (Aspen) - Need male for the catkins
Prunus (Flowering cherry) which varieties? 'Shirofugen', 'Kanzan', 'Shirotae', 'Taihaku', 'Umineko' Kanzan would be our favourite
Prunus serrula (Tibetan cherry) essential - stunning bark colour!
Prunus x subhirtella 'Autumnalis' (winter-flowering cherry) Lovely - not always true to name in flowering time tho!

Pyrus Salicifolia Pendula (WEEPING PEAR) bit 1970's housing estate! needs lots of pruning to keep it looking good
Quercus coccinea (Scarlet Oak)
Quercus ilex (Holm oak) lovely, but v.v. slow
Robinia pseudoacacia 'Frisia' (Golden Locust) essential, but very brittle when young so stake well
Sorbus aucuparia (Mountain ash / Rowan) Variety? 'Aspleniifolia', 'xanthocarpa' or Sorbus vilmorinii vilmorinii is good, sargentiana good for autumn colour
Sorbus casmiriana (Kashmir Rowan) super berry colour, easy and reliable
Sorbus hupehensis (Chinese Mountain Ash)

Fagus sylvatica fastigiata or "Dawyck" (Beech exclamation mark!) Super - Dawyck doesn't hold its colour long for us, so we'd stick with the straight fastigiata
Aesculus carnea briotii (Red Horse Chestnut) Worthwhile?? Yes, very attractive!
Calocedrus decurrens (Incense Cedar) Worthwhile??
Fraxinus ornus (manna ash) Worthwhile??
Mespilus germanica (Medlar) Worthwhile?? Certainly an interesting Novelty, I'd include it - even if you daren't eat the fruit you can entertain visitors with its common name
Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn redwood) worthwhile?? Yes, but needs lots of space ultimately!
Parrotia persica (Persian ironwood) Worthwhile??
Pinus radiata (Monterey pine) Worthwhile??
