Bamboo flowering...

Hi folksThought I'd pick peoples brains, so here's the problem.About 4 years ago I planted (what we are calling a bamboo wall) basically a 15M line of Phyllostachys Nigra. Which flowered/went to seed, as you can image I was slightly miffed when this happened and not knowing much about bamboo started to search the net to see what people recommended doing. I did not find much info out there so being a lazy bugger I left it. The next summer new leaf started to appear on the canes, so I left it thinking the plants were slowly recovering that autumn the same thing happened and fast forward a repeat the next year. The same thing is happening this year, lots of new leaf appearing. If the plants are going to recover then I'll keep them but if not I'll nuke the lot and start over.

  • Hi - have you seen any new culms?........or is the new growth just from the old canes? I would guess that if the growth is just from the existing canes then the prognosis is not good.
DAS should have some info on this from the IPPS - some one in there will know what will happen.
    Good luck with it,
    Cheers

  • Hi Richard

All new leaf was on the old canes last year, I've had a quick look and cannot see any culms, however, it is a bit dense out there will have a closer inspection this evening. Thanks for the pointer.
  • Hi Kerrie

Originally I was going to nuke the plants however, each years regrowth has been so prolific it really did look like the plants were reestablishing themselves, so I left them to see what would happen. I thought that once they had flowered the plants died off completely...obviously I was wrong.

    Thanks Mike

Richard's clue was unfortunately correct. I was surprised at the amount of new leaf, had never seen Bamboo flower before, until that point I just assumed it died off completely.
