Business - turnover

Would be interested to compare turnover with you.We generally aim for a turnover of £8000 a week. We have reduced our work force to three from 9 guys with only a £2000 drop in turnover. And still its all very tight and we aint wealthy by any means.

  • April was 8k, May 11k and June projected to be 15k.

We have 3 partners and a full time workforce of 3.

Our material costs are about 30% of turnover though.
  • Lara, are your 3 partners in addition to the full time workers? and are they on site working too? Thats a good turnover, well done!
  • Hi Susan

My husband and I started the business and I run the office while he takes responsibility for overseeing the sites. Our other partner was one of our foremen who has taken a share of the business. He floats between the office, site and client visits (we kind of job share as I have 3 kids aged 6 and under).

My husband is on leave at the moment as he suffered stroke like symptoms in May but has no proper diagnosis (he is 27!). They are running more tests but think that he may have MS. This will obviously mean he is not able to undertake the heavy work he was and we will probably have to recruit one more. We just have to see how it pans out for now.

It looks like you are squeezing a lot more out of the reduced team and reaching economies of scale easier - well done. Makes you wonder why you had nine before. My position is that a single Team Member must contribute in the region of £500 per day to our business coffers.
  • Mike yes I know!! makes me wonder too what on earth they were all doing!

Laura, sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulty-and hope you have a favourable outcome with the tests. And this leads me to starting another topic...how to find good ppl

We use www.gumtree.com quite a lot. The main navigation takes you to the London site but visit the regional Cities and Towns link. It is free to post an Ad (but not on London one). Take a look. We have secured a couple of good Kiwis whose work ethos was so much better than some UK nationals....
