  • I wonder whether it's worth bothering though................  it certainly makes no difference to myself whether the call's free or not. As nothing in this life is free, I'm sure most people will realise that the cost of the call is effectively just added on to the price of the job!!

As an overhead of £60 per year it equates to 3pence per hour. So not free but certainly not something that will worry most people.

Really i was thinking more along the lines of not being limited to moving house and having to change my signwriting, business cards, marketing material every time which will cost a lot more than £60.

Also where i have moved to i think most of the work i will be after will be in the next town so don't want an area code to determine whether someone will call or not.

Maybe in this age of cross network minutes it makes no difference but i just met a window fitter who says it has really helped him to generate enquiries.

Previously I have operated on mobile only but have to say I've a feeling that the older demagraphic in particular are dubious about mobile only businesses. My mother certainly is and her mobile plan means she has to pay to call me.

You could try a fake landline that diverts to your mobile. It's a local number to where you work /live. I've got one from invoco £3 a month or so (more if you get loads of calls but worth it if they convert) it's a more local feel than an 0800 in my opinion. Worth looking into anyway.

I've looked at this option already. Good point about the local feel. However where i live now there are lots of towns with different area codes and i don't want to limit my options. I am more into construction than maintenance these days and am prepared to travel, especially as where i have moved to you can cover ground quickly. In th SE i had a job about 8miles away that took an hour and quarter to get to....crazy. Here i do 10 mile in 15mins. I need to appeal to more than just my local area as where i live i don't think i am going to get job after job of high end work.

Sounds like the 0800 may work for you then. It's all about what will work for you!
I know what you mean with the travel time thing though. Lincoln can be a nightmare. I try to work north and east from my house as I've I go south or west it's just a traffic jam! I only do one site that way and it's about 35 minutes for about 3 and a half miles but the price is right so I go!!
