Natural England and Defra have provided detailed information on what to do should a project you are working on have to deal with the presence of bats.
All bat species and their breeding or resting places (roosts) are protected, with the threat of prison and fines should people be found guilty of breaking the law.
The guide outlines some possible scenarios for when you may come into contact with bats, including cutting down or removing branches from a mature tree and the use of insecticides.
You can apply for a licence should you believe the project can not be changed and so protect the bats or their roosts, again the guide provides detailed information on what you can do.
Ultimately, the guide says you should try everything else possible to avoid disturbing the bats, blocking access to or damaging their habitats.
Saying that in most cases you should be able to plan the work to achieve this.
