Next time you give the garden spade an extra shove, listen out for the odd metallic thud.
Because, retired gardener Anthony Lawrence, from Worplesdon, Surrey, was doing just that when he dug up a live grenade.
The Get Surrey website reports on how Anthony Lawrence was trying to move a large horn beam tree in the entrance to his drive when he struck the explosive, which was buried in the undergrowth.
And calm as you like, Anthony Lawrence picked it up, noticed the pin and arm were rusted up and put it to one side, not thinking to contact the police until a week later.
When the local police force arrived they brought in an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team who took the grenade and conducted a safe detonation of the explosive.
The EOD team said they deal with about eight lots of old explosive a week, and Anthony Lawrence thinks the grenade in his garden could have come from a nearby area that was used to test tanks during the Second World War.
